New Bear Happy Hours in Washington DC
In case you’re wondering, Bear Nonsense is thrilled about all of these new happy hours for gay men in Washington, DC. I’ll be going too!
Bear culture wins DC
When Bear Nonsense held its own first Bear events in a hidden dive bar over ten years ago, Bears and Cubs were a rag-tag group of refugees like a Bear Battlestar Gallactica fleet after cylons nuked Titan Bar. Since then the Bear community has gone through many changes, including becoming a full-fledged marketing niche that has taken over much of gay culture.
Bear Nonsense is no different. What started as an alternative to an event became an event of its own. Bear Happy Hour at Rock & Roll Hotel is now the longest-running continuously-operating bear event going in DC. Now there are many companion events to provide variety.
The idea of Beardom – be yourself, grow a beard (or not), keep your chest fur, have a beer, love your body, welcome newcomers, find your niche, embrace the nonsense – has taken hold in queer culture. Beardom has won.
But what have we lost?
Clubs. Potluck dinners on Sundays. Beer busts for charity. Bear runs. Movies. Billiards. That one bar that we all commiserate together in (for DC it was the old DC Eagle, then maybe Titan). The evolution of Bears means many things we used to do are now being done by other communities – pups, Sisters, kinksters, and of course leatherfolk, where Bears often find a home.
If you’re interested in helping Bear Nonsense build some of those community things, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Maybe we can put some cool things together.
Meanwhile, we keep on keeping’ on…
Come out to happy hour and find me if you want to discuss all this.
